1. France has banned fossil fuel ads

The new legislation prohibits advertising for all energy products related to fossil fuels like petrol products, coal and hydrogen-containing carbons. Any breaches of the law, companies could face fines of up to €100,000.

 

2. Scotland is the first country in the world to make period products free for all

There is now legal duty under the Period Products Act for local authorities to provide free period items like tampons and pads to anyone who needs them. These products will be distributed through councils, schools and other education facilities. 

 

3. Bus journeys in England capped to £2 a journey

A new cap on single bus journeys has already started in some parts of England, but will continue from January-March 2023. The Transport Secretary has announced £60 million for bus operators to ensure there is affordable transport around the country in the cost of living crisis, and encouraging more individuals to reduce their emissions by using public transport.

 

4. A Dutch city has banned meat adverts

The city of Haarlem, Netherland, has become the first city in the world to ban most meat advertisements for the impact it has on the climate. Intensively farmed meat ads will no longer be show in public places from 2024, this includes adverts from many fast food chains. 

 

5. The Ocean Clean up has removed 100,000kg plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The marine plastics organisation has now officially removed 101,353kg of marine plastic since August 2021, sweeping an area of ocean similar to the size of Luxembourg. This process needs to be repeated another 1,000 times to remove all of the marine litter in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
